  Creation by UCLG and the Spanish Agency for Cooperation of a Culture Fund for developing countries
Over the course of the meetings of the UCLG World Council in Istanbul, approval was granted for the creation of a Fund for Cooperation in Cultural Development, to be administrated by the UCLG World Secretariat and its Committee on Culture, which is presided over by the City of Barcelona.

  Istanbul World Water Forum
The 5th World Water Forum, organized by the Turkish Government and the World Water Council will be held in Istanbul from 16 to 22 March 2009. UCLG was deeply involved in the 4th World Water Forum, which took place in Mexico City in March 2006, and a dialogue was initiated at that time with representatives from national governments and legislative bodies.
